For foreign visitors
You can fly to Frankfurt/Main Airport (FRA) or Nuremberg Airport (NUE). From there you can take the train via Erfurt to Ilmenau or take a rental car. You can reach Ilmenau by rental car in app. 3 hours from Frankfurt/Main Airport or in app. 2 hours from Nuremberg Airport (NUE).
Arriving by public transport
Every hour you can go by train or bus from Erfurt to Ilmenau. The ride takes about 60 minutes. You can drive from the airport Erfurt with a rental car or taxi on the freeway A71 to Ilmenau. The ride takes approximately 35 minutes.
From railway station in Ilmenau: Walk five minutes towards Rudolstadt/Königsee (through the Langewiesener Straße). Then turn left into the Ehrenbergstraße and walk towards the campus of the TU Ilmenau. After about 500 meters you will arrive at the institute’s building of Fraunhofer IDMT which is on the left hand side next to the Ernst-Abbe-Zentrum (EAZ). A taxi ride takes about 5 minutes.
Arriving by car
From direction Frankfurt/Dresden/Berlin (freeway A4): Leave the freeway A4 at the intersection Erfurter Kreuz and take the freeway A71 towards Schweinfurt. Leave the freeway A71 at the departure Ilmenau Ost and turn right onto interstate B87 towards Ilmenau. At the second traffic light turn left towards TU Ilmenau. Turn right onto interstate B88 towards TU Ilmenau. After passing the place-name sign of Ilmenau and driving about 1500 meters turn into the Ehrenbergstraße towards the campus of the TU Ilmenau. After 600 meters you reach the institute’s building of Fraunhofer IDMT located on the left hand side next to the Ernst-Abbe-Zentrum (EAZ).For parking please turn left before the Ernst-Abbe-Zentrum.
From south (freeway A71): Leave the freeway A71 at departure Ilmenau West. Then take the interstate B4 towards Ilmenau. Follow the place-name signs »Universität/TU Ilmenau«. At the intersection Friedrich-Ebert-Str./Langewiesener Str. turn left, pass the railroad onto Langewiesener Straße and drive towards TU Ilmenau. After 500 meters turn left onto Ehrenbergstraße towards the campus of the TU Ilmenau. After 600 meters you reach the institute’s building of Fraunhofer IDMT located on the left hand side next to the Ernst-Abbe-Zentrum (EAZ). For parking please turn left before the Ernst-Abbe-Zentrum.
